Professor Sun Minghong is one of China’s leading oboists, educators, and academic leaders. He serves as Professor of Oboe and Master’s Supervisor in the Department of Orchestral Studies at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he has devoted more than four decades to performance, teaching, and the development of higher music education. A graduate of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Professor Sun studied under distinguished oboe pedagogues Chen Su’an, Zhou Songshan, and Sha Jianlin. After graduating with honors in 1982, he joined the conservatory’s faculty. In 1986, he was awarded a prestigious French Government Scholarship to pursue advanced studies at the Conservatoire de Rueil-Malmaison in Paris before returning to China in 1989 to continue his academic career. He was exceptionally promoted to Associate Professor in 1992 and Professor in 1996, later serving as Head of the Department of Orchestral Studies and becoming one of the Shanghai Conservatory’s first officially appointed Discipline Leaders. Professor Sun has made an outstanding contribution to oboe education in China. In 2016, he founded the Shanghai Oboetown professional exchange platform and established a new teaching team dedicated to advancing oboe pedagogy through internationally oriented and scientifically grounded educational methods. His students have won numerous prizes in major national and international competitions, including top awards at prestigious events such as the International Oboe Society’s Fox Oboe Competition. His course Oboe Performance Art was recognized as a Key Course by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. Beyond his work at the conservatory, Professor Sun has held numerous leadership positions in the international music community. He serves as Vice Chairman of the China Wind Music Association, Vice President of the Asia-Pacific Double Reed Society, and is a member of the International Double Reed Society, while also holding visiting and adjunct professorships at several leading Chinese universities. An acclaimed performer, editor, and author, Professor Sun has published numerous pedagogical collections, translated educational materials, and released several acclaimed oboe recordings, making a lasting contribution to both oboe performance and music education in China and internationally.
